SEND Inclusion and Learning

Strengthening inclusive education and local SEND provision

Multicoloured hands reaching upwards, in a line

LIIA’s Inclusion and Learning work supports London to strengthen inclusive practice across early years, schools and post-16 settings. The programme focuses on improving universal provision so that more children and young people with SEND can thrive in local, mainstream environments and access the right support at the right time.

This includes the Investing in Inclusion programme, development of ‘what works’ models for schools and settings, and pan-London learning through SEND conferences, digital resources and peer networks.

Project Goals

This project aims to improve the quality and consistency of inclusive practice across London’s education system. It supports schools and settings to identify and embed what works well for children and young people with SEND, reduce unnecessary escalation into specialist provision and strengthen system leadership for inclusion. The programme aligns inclusion activity with SEND diagnostics and reform priorities to support sustainable improvement.

Governance

This programme reports into the ALDCS SEND Steering Group and works closely with education and inclusion networks across London.

2026 LIIA SEND Inclusion and Learning Conference

In July 2026, the first-ever LIIA SEND Inclusion & Learning Conference marked a significant milestone, bringing together more than 200 leaders, practitioners and partners from education, local authorities, health services and SEND organisations from across the London.

Celebrating the completion of the inaugural Investing in Inclusion Programme, the event showcased progress, shared innovative practice and strengthened collaboration. Through keynote speakers, workshops, panel discussions and an Investing in Inclusion Marketplace featuring over 30 exhibitors, attendees explored key themes including inclusive practice, workforce development, SEND reform, reducing disproportionality and improving multi-agency working.

It was a fantastic occasion and we are already preparing for the next one!

Call for Effective Practice Examples: ‘Inclusion Bases’ Across London

Following the Department for Education’s recent Inclusion Bases in Schools guidance, LIIA is keen to showcase innovative and effective practice that already exists across mainstream settings in London!

We want to capture different examples of inclusion bases that specialise in a range of areas, like autism, speech, language and communication, SEMH and more. This is designed to inspire the development of practice across London during this demanding time.

We want to hear from innovative schools and settings that:

– Improve outcomes for children and young people
– Enable pupils to participate successfully in mainstream school life
– Strengthen inclusive practice across the whole school
– Make effective use of specialist expertise work in partnership with families and other professionals
