London Child Remand Project

Background

Children remanded to custody often experience poorer outcomes, including disruption to education, family relationships and future opportunities. Across London, there is a recognised need to improve the range and accessibility of community-based alternatives that can safely support children while reducing reliance on custodial remand.

The London Child Remand Project (LCRP) is a three-year, Ministry of Justice-funded initiative led by the London Innovation & Improvement Alliance (LIIA). Through investment in new services, improved practice and stronger partnership working, the project aims to reduce the use of custodial remand and improve outcomes for children across London.

Bringing together stakeholders from across London’s youth justice system, the project seeks to identify barriers to reducing custodial remand, improve decision-making, and develop effective community-based alternatives to custody that can be sustained beyond the life of the programme.

Project Goals

The project aims to:

Reduce the number of children remanded to custody across London.
Increase the availability and use of community-based alternatives to custodial remand.
Improve outcomes for children through access to accommodation, education, family support and tailored interventions.
Strengthen decision-making through better information sharing, training and professional practice.
Improve partnership working between local authorities, youth justice services, police, courts and other agencies.
Address racial disproportionality within the remand system, particularly for Black and Global Majority children.
Support more strategic and effective use of remand funding across London.
Develop a stronger evidence base through improved data collection, monitoring and evaluation.
